What You Need to Know About Garden Hoses for Pressure Washing?

Hoses for pressure washer matter!  You will realize this when you buy a perfect one.  Think of one that will last for years, is super easy to use, and the best one for your needs.

Still, a decent model doesn’t have to cost a lot.  Garden hoses for pressure washer are available at every price point, size and type of garden.   The new material and technology enable the creation of water hoses that are virtually kink-free, lighter and easier to maneuver.

Before embarking on finding the best garden hoses for a pressure washer, let’s find out various types of hoses.

Types of Pressure Washer Hoses

The categories vary in material, length, diameter, and connections.

MaterialThe material determines durability and flexibility as well as affordability. PVC plastic hose:  Most common, relatively rigid, and not flexible enough.Rubber hose: flexible but weightier than a plastic hose and won’t curl or kink as much.  The hose leaves blacks streaks/marking on the surface and concrete.Polyurethane hose:   The latest pressure washer hose material-made of steel-braided with bendable and clear plastic casing. It’s the best for flexibility, less the marring.
LengthThe pressure washer’s hose is usually 20-25ft. Long hose but extend 50 to 100ft long pipe.  In case you want a longer hose, you can replace or extend to as far as 200 ft.  The length determines how far you can use it.
Diameter/ConnectorsFor diameter, consider 1/4 in, 5/16 in, and 3/8 options. Pressure washer hose has two types of connectors, one joining the hose and water inlet. The other enters the hose to the nozzle or gun, to eject high-pressure water.
PurposeSeveral types are depending on the use.  A residential-grade pressure washer hose works well for medium-duty washing. In comparison, a commercial-grade variety is the best for businesses and small contractor operates.

How to select the right pressure washer hose?

Hose length

Know you’re long-term, and urgent watering needs to help narrow down on the length choice.

For example, a small home/car probably needs short pressure washer hose for washing, watering lawn or cleaning driveway. Thus a 20-50ft hose is perfect.  But for a bigger home or vehicle opt for 100ft.

Hose extension or not

Hose length depends on machine power.  For an instant, you cannot buy a 200ft for a low power pressure washer.  The hose must be compatible with the washer in terms of power specs.  That way, both the hose and the washer will provide the desired result.

Hose size and diameter

The diameter of the hose is vital.  Gas-powered or electric washer for residential use works best with a ¼ in power hose. It is ideal for 2,700 psi. But for a washer with over 34,000 psi or more, consider 5/16 inch.  A hose with 3/8 in diameter is perfect for commercial use for up to 5,000 psi.

Material type

Material affects flexibility, affordability, maneuver and storage.   PVC plastic is quite affordable but will break easily and not very flexible. A rubber hose is flexible but ends up leaving black marking on your concrete. But polyurethane hose is quite flexible and easy to use.

Connectors

The hose and the washer nozzle and faucet must be compatible. Makes sure you pick a hose with a twist or snap connection that mattes both the faucet and the nozzle.

Conclusion

Well, which garden hose for pressure washer did you decide to buy?  We highly recommend you pick a hose that fits your pressure washing need and budget.

I hope this article helps you find the best garden hose for your pressure washer.

Growing Tomatoes All Year https://gardenranker.com/growing-tomatoes-all-year/ https://gardenranker.com/growing-tomatoes-all-year/#respond Sat, 24 Oct 2020 15:49:33 +0000 https://gardenranker.com/?p=2103 Read more]]> The home gardener needs to follow the following 6 procedures in order to produce a continuous yield of high quality tomato fruit over the entire growing season.

Home Tomato Garden Site Selection

The ideal site is one that is in full sun in the morning hours and partial shade in the afternoon hours.  In areas of frequent cloud cover where sun light intensity and duration are limited, full sun all day would be desirable.  High light intensity exposure in the afternoon can reduce fruit set and result in poor fruit quality.

Avoid small depressions and the top of knolls where air temperature extremes can commonly occur, and/or where air movement is restricted.  Avoid sites that are downwind of power or industrial plants, or fields devoted to row crop production or fruit orchards where agricultural chemicals are frequently used for weed, disease and insect control as the tomato plant is sensitive to emission gases and pest chemicals.

The site should be such that there is light air movement, but not where strong winds are frequent. It is not recommended to plant tomatoes when the previous crop was tomato. The use a winter (between seasons) cover crop, however, can serve as a means of crop rotation, allowing repeated tomato plantings unless there occurs seedling loss due to soil organisms that become pathogenic, therefore, requiring selection of another planting site.

Home Tomato Garden Soil Requirements

The “ideal” soil texture is either a loam, sandy clay loam or silt loam with a top soil depth of at least 6 inches.  Sandy, clay and organic soils as well as shallow soils are the least desirable, although successful plant production and good fruit yields can be obtained with properly applied management procedures.

The soil should easily drain after a rainfall event or applied irrigation water.  The soil water pH should range between 5.8 to 6.5 and the essential plant nutrient element contents be within the “sufficiency” range based on a soil test determination.  Based on a soil test recommendation when either lime and/or fertilizer treatments are required, in the fall evenly broadcast limestone (dolomitic) and mix into the soil by spading to the soil surface depth.

In the spring, evenly broadcast the recommended fertilizer and mix into the soil by spading to the surface soil depth. In order to maintain soil structure, do not roto till the soil, or cultivate the soil when wet.  A winter cover crop can be beneficial as a means of increasing the organic matter content of the soil and improving soil tilth.

Either a grass or legume cover crop is appropriate.  Be sure to fall plant in sufficient time to ensure good plant growth before cold weather sets in.  Adding a nitrogen (N) plus potassium (K) containing general purpose fertilizer maybe needed to enhance good plant growth. Turn the cover crop over by spading the soil to the surface soil depth at least 4 weeks prior to setting tomato transplants. A cover crop can also be a means of controlling the potential for pathogens accumulating in the soil with repeated planting of tomato.

Home Garden Tomato Variety Selection

There are 3 major factors to be considered when selecting a variety, whether determinate or indeterminate, and then maturity class (early, mid-season, late), and resistance to diseases and insects.  Other factors are fruit characteristics, such as size and color. Fruit flavor is somewhat related to variety, although growing conditions is equally a factor as well as the length of time on the plant before harvest, longer on the plant, the more likely the higher will be the fruit flavor.

A wide range of Heirloom varieties are readily available, offering the grower a range of fruiting characteristics including fruit color and size. However, some of these varieties may be sensitive to particular environmental conditions, such as moisture, light intensity and temperature stress as well as lacking resistance to commonly occurring diseases and insects.  Variety selection should be made based on expected use and for meeting the needs for daily consumption and other uses, such as the making of sauces and for canning.

Home Garden Tomato Plant Fertilization

The tomato plant is considered a “moderate to heavy” feeder, therefore, plant growth as well as fruit yield and quality will be significantly affected by the availability of the essential major nutrient elements, particularly nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) as well as the micronutrients boron (B) and zinc (Zn).

Over fertilization is as detrimental to plant growth and fruit yield as deficiencies of the major nutrient elements, with the major nutrient element frequently over applied being phosphorus (P).  In addition, high nitrogen (N) will reduce flowering and fruit set.  Sufficient potassium (K) is needed to ensure good fruit quality.  The lack of sufficient calcium (Ca) as well as magnesium (Mg) can result in the occurrence of blossom-end rot in developing fruit.

If the soil water pH is maintained within the desired range, 5.8 to 6.5, by liming using dolomitic limestone, the rate determined based on a soil test recommendation, the deficiency of either of these elements is not likely to occur.  The use of a general purpose fertilizer, or an organic source, such as composted animal manure, is not recommended and can lead to nutrient element insufficiencies that can be difficult to correct.

Have the soil tested and follow the soil test recommendation using fertilizer materials of known elemental content. Be equally aware of excesses as well as deficiencies. A good indicator of over fertilization is vigorous vegetative plant growth, the rapid development of suckers coupled with low fruit set and yield. If the soil fertility level is within the desired range and a soil test-based lime and fertilizer program followed, supplemental fertilization will not be required during the growing season. Nutrient element insufficiencies occurring during the growing season are difficult to correct as supplemental treatments are usually ineffective.

Home Garden Tomato Plant Cultural Practices

Depending on what tomato variety is selected, either determinate or indeterminate, plant spacing and control of the growth habit is essential for high fruit yields and good fruit quality.  Close plant spacing (less than 18 inches in the row and 36 inches between rows) can reduce fruit yield and quality. For the indeterminate varieties, the plant will require support to hold the plant upright, either tied to a stake or fence, or maintained within an upright cage.  The major cultural requirement is to remove both axial and fruit stem suckers as they appear.

Axial suckers not removed will develop into fruiting stems, while fruit cluster vegetative stems will draw carbohydrates from the developing fruit, resulting in reduced fruit size.   In some instances, the removing of fruit (known as fruit pruning) may be required to control the number of fruit on each cluster, ensuring uniform fruit size as well as a means of sustaining further fruit set and development.  Removing slow developing fruit, and the maintaining of a consistent number of fruit per cluster will increase fruit quality.

A tomato plant tends to maintain a constant weight of fruit on the plant during its fruiting period, therefore, fruit number and size will counter each other, large fruit, fewer number; small fruit, larger number.  Fruit disorders (blossom-end rot, cracking, catfacing, etc.) may not appear until 10 to 14 days after a stressful environmental event, such as cool or hot weather, cloudy or high light intensity conditions, excessive rainfall or a period of drought.

As the plant matures, remove and discard senescing leaves and those that have been damaged mechanically or by insects. Do not leave removed foliage in the garden site. Toward the end of the fruiting period, topping the plant (removing the growing terminal) will result in more rapid fruit development and an increase in fruit size for those fruit existing on the plant.

Home Garden Tomato Plant Moisture Requirements

A mature tomato plant will transpire up to a quart of water per day depending on weather conditions, stage of plant growth and fruit load.  Consistency of water availability is essential to maintain vigorous plant growth, uniform fruit set, and steady fruit development.

Lack of fruit set is frequently related to moisture stress correlated with hot dry environmental conditions, or low air temperatures and reduced light intensity.  One of the major factors associated with the occurrence of the fruit disorder, blossom-end rot, is moisture stress.  If natural rainfall is insufficient to keep the soil moist (not wet), in the early evening, apply water to the soil around the plant out to 12 inches.

The application of mulch around the base of the tomato plant may be helpful in reducing moisture loss from the soil by evaporation; however, mulch will tend to keep the soil cool and moist that may, in turn, reduce plant growth and fruit yield.  Applying mulch between the plants and the rows can help to keep the surrounding soil moist while providing a foot path between the plant rows.

Home Garden Tomato Plant Insect and Disease Control

Selecting only those varieties that have genetic resistance to diseases and insects is desired. The occurrence of disease and insect pests can be related to cultural practices, such a moisture control, plant nutritional status, air movement around the plant and weather conditions. The grower should be prepared to deal with infestations when they occur using only those control chemicals label-approved for the tomato plant and the pest to be controlled.

Monitoring the plant on a daily basis is essential to quickly discover a potential infestation. Early identification of a pest infestation is essential in terms of effective control as after the fact, control may be difficult or impossible. Proper identification of the pest affecting the plant is essential before applying any control measures.

The grower should be aware of those pests in the region that commonly affect tomato plants as well as the sensitivity of the chosen variety to a particular pest so that proper control measures can be applied, if and when an infestation occurs.  Foliage that has been affected by the presence of disease organisms and insects should be quickly removed from the plant and from the garden site.

1. Field King Professional 190328 – Best Overall Backpack Sprayer

Any backpack sprayer review is incomplete without Field King Professional 190328- Yes, it’s that good!

Field King can be your biggest companion when it comes to gardening. It includes all those features which you will not get in the others.

The highlight of this sprayer is the no-leak pump design that offers constant pressure in the unit, making it both fast and efficient. Furthermore, this unique design also protects your skin from harmful chemicals.

The pump also comes with a variety of interchangeable nozzles. It can build pressure up to 150 psi which is sufficient to cover a full-length garden. Moreover, operator fatigue is low due to the shutoff mechanism.

Overall, this product is brilliant, offering you an extended service life with excellent customer reviews. The only drawback is this amazing product lacks the comfort of lumbar support on the harness.

2. Chapin 63985 4-Gallon Backpack Sprayer – The Best Premium Model

If we talk about premium backpack sprayer, Chaplin 63985 makes it to the list. The lost comfort of Field King is excellently presented by this model with a comfortable harness system. Furthermore re, a top-notch performance that can protect your garden effectively.

This battery backpack sprayer works on a 20-Volt Lithium-Ion battery that gives you a steady flow rate. Eventually, it results in a uniform spray pattern.

The best part about this sprayer is the padded support to the harness that makes spraying pesticide equivalent to taking a walk in the garden. While this is a brilliant sprayer on the list, it is also the most expensive one.

So, if you are not a professional or do gardening as your hobby, this might be a little hard on your pockets. Secondly, the weight of the machine is a bit high that increases operator fatigue. Hence, select this when you are too sure of it.

3. Chapin 61800 4-Gallon Backpack Sprayer – The Best Budget Buy

A gardener with budget or a hobby gardener looks for the best within budget. So, if you are one of them, this one is best suited for you.

Overall, this model is a great deal-breaker for homeowners. It is best in terms of affordability and functionality.

5. Solo 425 4-Gallon Backpack Sprayer

If you look closely on Amazon, you will find this model as one of the best-selling models on the platform. Its popularity is due to the ease, economy and functionality blended into one.

You cannot expect much from this device in terms of design because it’s minimal. Surprisingly, that’s what makes it special. You can bare essential design with a brilliant performance in one go.

The piston pump of the model works up to 60 psi that might be a little less compared to other operating pressures up to 150 psi. To be honest, 60 psi is sufficient for a home garden. If you still wish for more, you can make up the pressure with different nozzles.

This model is compatible with TeeJet spray nozzles. Thus, you can bring variety to your basic gardening tool. Similar to others, it comes with a shutoff valve and reduced operator fatigue.

The only drawback is the hard strapping and harness system. However, Solo also sells luxury straps separately. So, you can get these for added comfort.

Growing your vegetable garden is gratifying and exciting in many ways. From sowing the seeds to reaping healthy, luscious vegetables, everything is a rewarding experience. Now, a home garden can only be made when you have a good deal of space and required knowledge. Further, it is a must for you to know how to get rid of nasty pests that may destroy your lovely garden and veggies. You need a reliable method to prevent pest infestation, and that’s when you can use the best backpack sprayer.

How to Find the Right Backpack Sprayer?

First things first – you should focus on buying a backpack sprayer that works efficiently and offers you complete ease. Here are some more aspects to consider –

Manual or Battery-Operated?

Spraying your plants with a manual sprayer or applicator can be a difficult task. Sometimes, this applicator can even cause injuries to old gardeners.

On the other hand, a battery-operated backpack pump sprayer can be tucked easily on your back. It lets you spray the entire garden (no matter how big) without any operator fatigue. It’s easy and preferred by several modern-day gardeners. It takes off the efforts to carry a spray manually and take a rest for a day due to operational fatigue. Frankly speaking, it is all fun and games where you can treat your garden within minutes, without feeling exhausted.

Chemical Compatibility

You might not know, but several herbicides contain chemicals that can corrode even the best backpack sprayer. So, if you are going to use your device primarily for applying herbicides and pesticides, make sure to buy a sprayer that is well-designed to handle chemical compositions.

Tank Capacity

This varies greatly from one gardener to another.

Buying a very small sprayer will make halt while completing large jobs. On the other hand, if you buy a big- bulky one, it will make you uncomfortable while treating your lawn. The best idea is to find the right kind of backpack sprayer that is perfect for your needs. Consider your lawn size and requirements and buy the best backpack sprayer accordingly.

Sprayer Weight

Last and important point to consider when choosing a backpack sprayer is its weight. You are supposed to carry the device on your back while treating the lawn, and a heavy-weight backpack will make you feel miserable.

To avoid hassle and regrets, invest in a backpack that is lightweight and easy to carry. Most gardeners prefer to shop for a device that weighs between 7-14 pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process of buying a backpack garden sprayer is a little overwhelming, especially for a newbie lawn enthusiast. To help you understand the device and its importance, we have listed commonly asked questions on backpack sprayers.

Why is Backpack Sprayer Important?

This question can come to any amateur gardener’s mind.

Sprayers are crucial when it comes to gardening. Every plant, tree, or vegetable is prone to diseases or outbreaks or infestation. In such a case, a sprayer tends to be the best companion of a gardener.

A gardener can spray down the plants efficiently and control the plant problems. You can also spray your garden with fertilizers or weed preventing medicine from keeping your garden fresh and free from unintended guests.

Are Motorized Pumps Worth the Money?

Well, it can depend. A motorized pump can only be beneficial if you have a large amount of space to spray. However, if you are a senior gardener with grip problems, this can be a good deal for you. On the other hand, your average-sized home garden can work fine with even a manual backpack sprayer.

What is the Working Pressure of a Backpack Sprayer?

Usually, a working pressure between 40 to 60 psi is sufficient for a home gardener. However, professionals might need more up to 100 psi or more. Remember, the more the psi, the more is the sprayer coverage area.

Is Backpack Sprayer Safe to Wear?

Yes! It is completely safe to wear your backpack sprayer and use. Whenever you receive your sprayer, make sure to go through the manufacturer guidelines closely. It must have a guideline for calibration of wand and pump. Make sure to perform before the operation.

Overall, you don’t need to worry about wearing backpack sprayer. It wouldn’t cause you any harm even if the unit were to fail.

Our Take

The above-mentioned backpack sprayers are the top 5 picked out of dozens. These are specially picked keeping your affordability as well as functionality in mind. The best part about these models is that these are all multi-functional and cover various applications in both the garden and the field.

However, there is no such thing as perfect. A device can be close to perfect, but there will always be something lacking. For instance, what might work for a home gardener might not work for a landscaper and so forth. Hence, don’t fall for the perfect illusion. Check the highly rated options and find the best backpack sprayer that is ideal for your requirement.

Conclusion

If you are a newbie gardener, buying a backpack sprayer can be a little tricky, but it’s not that complicated.

The first thing you should always look for is comfort. Second, should be the price. Lastly, its user-friendly operation. Our take in this article has been focused on all these three elements to bring up the best for you. However, again, it is up to you to select the one that meets your garden needs.

We hope it is clear that a backpack sprayer is a must-have in the garden. If you are a gardening enthusiast or professional landscaper, a backpack sprayer can make several tasks easier for you. However, before buying one, carefully jot down your needs and make an informed decision. After all, these devices are expected to help you not overwhelm you! Stay tuned with us for more genuine product reviews!

Benefits of Eating Organic Food https://gardenranker.com/benefits-of-eating-organic-food/ https://gardenranker.com/benefits-of-eating-organic-food/#respond Wed, 21 Oct 2020 12:57:51 +0000 https://gardenranker.com/?p=2039 Read more]]> Organic food is food that has been grown without the use of toxic chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers. The food is as natural as can be, safer for the environment and usually tastes better too. Most importantly though, eating this food is healthier for you and may provide many health benefits, which is what this article is all about.

Even though further research needs to be done to gain a better understanding of the benefits of organic food, there is still much valuable information to share with you.

Before we discuss the actual health benefits of eating whole food, lets take a look at the advantages it has over non-organic food.

It’s a fact that this food is highly nutritious and contains higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C and minerals like magnesium, calcium and iron are just some of the nutrients organic food contains higher amounts of.

Whole foods also contain higher amounts of antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of developing cancers.

You may be surprised to know, but the vegetables we eat today are nowhere near as nutritious as they were 50 or even 15 years ago. Farmers tend to take shortcuts when growing food, and the fastest way is generally not the best way to do something. This trend is expected to continue, so if eating highly nutritious food is important to you, looking into organic foods is something worth considering.

If you were wondering why organic food hasn’t exactly taken the world by storm, it’s mainly due to the extra cost associated with organic growing. Demand is greater than supply and as a result, you can expect to pay about 20% extra for this kind of food..

Numerous studies have been conducted to find out the benefits whole foods can provide us humans. Many results are still fairly inconclusive however there have been many reported cases of benefits when animals are fed organic food.

The reason for the vagueness in health benefits is due to many reasons such as: incorrect method of testing and the lengthy time it takes to determine results of this nature. However several studies have shown benefits such as:

  • Decline in colds and other conditions
  • Improves dental health
  • Improves flow of your overall system
  • Greater chance of sprains and fractures
  • Reduces chance of injury
  • Better over health

As mentioned, the subject of organic food vs non organic food is very iffy and many researches believe that this food provides little to no health benefits.

Thinking about it logically, surely food that has been grown as it was intended to and that contains no added toxic chemicals has to be considerably healthier for us.

Whether the extra cost associated with organic food is worth the money is entirely up to the person. There is insufficient evidence to say something like “eating whole foods will reduce the likelihood of getting heart disease”.

Does ‘Organic’ Make a Difference? https://gardenranker.com/does-organic-make-a-difference/ https://gardenranker.com/does-organic-make-a-difference/#respond Wed, 21 Oct 2020 12:51:42 +0000 https://gardenranker.com/?p=2036 Read more]]> “Pay how much for a pound of organic bananas? Are you crazy?” The sentiment was one I had echoed myself only 8 years before when I took my first trip into a health food store, which happened to be a Whole Foods Market, and saw the prices. “I’m not paying that much for some special bananas!” I heard the woman say from the next aisle. “What difference does it make anyway?”

I thought it was a great question. This was one I had struggled with trying to make ends meet on a teacher’s salary as a stay-at-home mom. What was the difference between conventional and organic? Is it enough of a difference to justify the extra expense? I wanted to do what was best for my family, but wasn’t sure what that was at the time.

A Brief History of Organic

Up until the middle part of the last century, all food was organic. Chemical agriculture was just really catching on then, which changed the way farming was managed in this country. Up until that time, careful management of the soil and smaller crops were the norm, along with crop rotation or growing certain plants together to support the growth of the others. It was also common for each family to have their own garden. When chemical fertilizers made their way onto the scene, farmers could grow much more food with less effort. They could kill the pests that would have devastated their crops in the past. It seemed like a great plan.

But with the addition of the fertilizers, pesticides, and less attention to the quality of the soil, the net result was food that was no longer as nutrient dense, and had the added disadvantage of toxic chemicals. Micronutrients that used to abound in the soil were no longer present, which resulted in food that didn’t taste as good. Ask anyone who is older than about 50 if produce tastes different than they remember it tasting when they were young. Most likely, the answer will be yes. Nutrients taste good. That apple with no taste has very little nutrition.

During the 1980’s, the word organic began popping up in health food stores, but there was no standard for what could be called organic and what couldn’t. During the 1990’s, the first standards for organic foods were set. In 2007, more legislation was passed to more clearly define what was acceptable for organically grown foods and what wasn’t. In the meantime, organic foods have become big business and many companies that were formally conventional have now started organic lines, like Dole. The advantage was that organic foods were now readily available at most grocery stores. As organic became more commercially available, prices started to go down, but the intention behind the movement shifted into making money, rather than doing what was ultimately best for people and the environment. Consumer confidence in the organic label dropped as incidents formally known to only affect conventional crops started happening with the organic crops.

As a side note, some farmers are now producing what is called biodynamic produce. These crops are considered even better than organic and special attention is paid to the soil for optimal health of the plants and high nutrient content. Like organic, it also must be free from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Organic is better than conventional, but biodynamic is even better than organic.

Why is organic better than conventional?

Chemicals used to protect food from pests are harmful to young children. Young children’s bodies have difficulty removing the chemicals ingested through food and children tend to eat more produce per pound of body weight than adults. However, the “safety” criteria often sited is based upon adults, not children. By eating several of the most contaminated produce in a day, your children are exposed to an average of 15 pesticides per day. You can reduce that by around 90% by simply eating more of the least contaminated foods. Organic food, by definition, must be free of synthetic chemicals. More attention must be paid to the soil in order for organic foods to grow, so they also tend to be more nutrient dense.

My favorite story about organics is taken from a zoo. They were feeding the monkeys a mix of organic and conventional bananas. The zookeepers discovered that the monkeys always peeled the conventional bananas, but ate the organic bananas whole, peel and all, which is normal for them. Even the animals know the difference!

Why are pesticides so bad? Don’t they just wash off?

Pesticide ingestion has been found to contribute to the following health problems, according to numerous animal and human studies:

  • Cancer
  • Fertility problems
  • Brain tumors
  • Childhood leukemia
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Hormone or endocrine system problems
  • Nervous system damage

Read that last one again: Nervous system damage. Most pesticides are designed to attack the nervous systems of pests! I couldn’t understand how anything that attacks the nervous system could ever be considered “safe” for anyone, let alone children.

Keep in mind that pesticides are not just on the outside of fruits and vegetables, as is commonly thought, but are taken up inside the produce through the soil. Even when you wash the outside or peel the skin off, though this will lower the pesticide exposure, it will not remove all pesticides. However, by removing the skin, you are also losing valuable nutrients found in the peels and outside layer of the fruit or vegetable.

How to Attract Wild Birds to Your Garden https://gardenranker.com/how-to-attract-wild-birds-to-your-garden/ https://gardenranker.com/how-to-attract-wild-birds-to-your-garden/#respond Sun, 18 Oct 2020 21:11:54 +0000 https://gardenranker.com/?p=2023 Read more]]> If you’re like most gardeners, hearing wild-birds sing and flutter around in your garden or seeing a hummingbird magically feeding on your beautiful flowering plants or hovering around your hummingbird feeder is one of the greatest delights in being outdoors.

There are so many possibilities for attracting wild-birds in general. Birdfeeders, bird house designs and bird baths to meet the needs of virtually every type of bird, are the most common and obvious ways.

Certainly, these are fun and practical ways for feeding, watering and providing shelter for your birds to protect them from the elements and to raise their young. But there’s a huge bonus in it for you as well! They also make beautiful and delightful garden accents.

However, all the things I’ve mentioned just touch on the surface of the many methods you can employ. When we think of wild-birds and wild-bird watching, we often think about planning a trip, and donning our most protective outdoor gear to trudge through a damp forest or tropical jungle just to get a glimpse of a few of these beautiful creatures. Here’s a novel idea …. there is no need to leave your own home if you have a garden and you’ve put a little effort into attracting wild-birds!

It’s really quite simple to attract wild-birds and other small wildlife and so pleasant to watch them all while sipping your morning tea or coffee. I can’t think of a more soothing way to start your day.

Specific Tips You Can Use to Attract Wild-Birds

  1. Provide bird houses with various sized entry holes. This will allow different species of bird to nest. If they are all one size, some of the more aggressive species will chase others out of the boxes.

Also, you’ll want to position your bird houses away from predators. And by that, I mean all predators — not just the neighbor’s cat but dogs, rats, and any other ‘wild’ creatures that live in your area and would find wild-birds tasty morsels!

  1. Provide food regularly. Unless you provide food regularly, when natural food is scarce, the birds will simply look elsewhere.

Along wild bird food you can purchase, don’t forget about providing natural sources of food by leaving leaves and pieces of bark under bushes and trees, this provides a habitat for insects, which are of course, natural food for birds.

  1. Water is a critical component as well for your wild-bird care. It can be in the form of a kai pond (natural or man-made), or one of the beautiful and unusual birdbaths you can purchase online. All creatures need a supply of drinking water. You will need to remove debris every few days to keep the water fresh and as clean as possible.

When the bird bath itself needs a good cleaning, just use a stiff brush with clear water and a little elbow grease. Do NOT use any soaps or household cleaners!

You can purchase bird houses, nest boxes, bird baths and bird feeders either online or at retail stores. I like to get all mine directly from Amazon as there are far more choices, and your yard will be beautiful and individual …. not like every other house on your block!

Remember you can’t just throw some seed on the driveway or the grass and expect a flock of birds to arrive by lunchtime. It can take days or even weeks to attract some of the wild-birds you’ve been dreaming of.

If you are patient and provide the best environment for them, you will be richly rewarded and your garden will turn into a haven of fascinating activity!

Once you get the basics in place and train yourself to put out feed and clean water regularly, you will be ready to move on to selectively feeding to attract the species of birds you most admire.

Ideas and Instructions for the Three Basic Bird Care Needs

If you’re handy, there are also design plans to make your own bird accessories. I’ve included a place on my website that specializes in just that alone!

Birdhouses

What Vegetables And Fruits Should You Plant in your Garden? https://gardenranker.com/what-vegetables-and-fruits-should-you-plant-in-your-garden/ https://gardenranker.com/what-vegetables-and-fruits-should-you-plant-in-your-garden/#respond Sun, 18 Oct 2020 20:49:25 +0000 https://gardenranker.com/?p=2019 Read more]]> A good place to start weather you are starting from scratch or developing your garden year by year is to gain wisdom from all you can observe of your landscape.  Doing this will minimize gardening pitfalls.  Look out your window, walk around your garden area.

Collect all the information you can to gain understanding of what and when things should be done.  Common sense goes a long ways, add that with your personal observations, and you have all you need to get a good start the best usage of your time to gain the most results.

Evaluate and make your plan.

Step back and look closely at how the landscape is performing, both functionally as well as aesthetically.  Ask these questions: What goals do I have?  Do I want a dual purpose garden? Will it provide mental respite as well as healthy crops?  What features lend themselves to a focal point (dominant feature) or pleasant walkway for planning around?  How do pole beans or upright sweet corn set the stage?  How do the oregano and mint textures (leaf and stem) harmonize with the colors, silhouettes and shapes of their companion plants?  What type of lighting and shadows from the sun at various stages of the day as well as the evening moon’s rays do you see to add to the excitement of the view?  These are just a few considerations that may bring greater enjoyment to that bell pepper’s flavor or the pie grandma made from your rhubarb, or mint in your glass of ice tea, or maybe a fruit salad with hand-picked blueberries and strawberries.

Mark, stake, label, or flag to indicate the exact locations of seeds, vining plants, watering and fertilizing sites are.  As your squash vines start sprawling over this will help you not get lost as to where the hose end went.

Planting your future food:

If you started your tomato plants indoors or purchased them, you will want to transplant them one inch or deeper (to the first set of leaves).  Put stakes or cages up now so you don’t have to hassle with it later and risking damage to your plant.

Sweet potatoes are good to plant this month in the Midwest.  Replace cold season plants with warm season varieties such as beans, egg-plant, and pepper.  Work up the space, add some organic matter then plant after last harvest of your cold season vegetables.  Keep proper spacing for sweet or pop corn to ensure proper cross –pollination and room for mature growth.

Care towards your good harvest

Shad from direct sunlight allows for a longer harvest time.  Cool season leafy vegetables like lettuce, spinach and others will benefit from a shade cloth or fabric with the density of window screen over them.

After you cut and enjoy asparagus spears (not beyond stalks reaching pencil sized), allow the plant to grow and fern out (opening of leaves).  Thin out and remove plant seedlings of beans, anise, and peas from any situation to avoid overcrowding.  Select, if possible, the weakest plants to discard.   New growth, tie up on vines as they need to avoid breaking stems and damage.

Watering good yet do so responsibly:

Keep as much moisture off the plant leaves, therefore minimize overhead watering.  To continue watering from over head increases the chance of disease.  If you must water from overhead, do it as early in the morning as you can so the leaves may dry during the day.

Food for the food- Fertilizing

Grapes need a balance of (12-12-12 or similar) fertilizer.  One quarter cup around each vine installed earlier this year.  Apply fertilizer to older vies as the bulbs swell.  Use one cup for two-year-old vines.  One to One-one half cups for three-year-old vines and one to two cups of plant food for each year of growth on older vines.

Tomatoes need tomato fertilizer with an analysis 6-24-24 or similar product.

The first number is low so minimize adding nitrogen.  Nitrogen encourages foliage and minimized fruit formation.

For your apple trees you will need to fertilize the ones which have been in place one year or longer.  Administer one pound of 12-12-12 each year.

Pruning:

To save the energy of the rhubarb plant, cut off flower and seed stalks.  Flowers from any squash and any fruits at the time of installation pinch off (remove). The plant will spend its energy trying to develop and keep fruit growing but it needs time to acclimate and establish in the garden.

Disease:

Watch for asparagus beetles and striped and spotted cucumber beetles.  These pests chew and transmit diseases in specific plants.  Apple trees signs to watch for are codling moths; the caterpillars are leaf eaters.

Caterpillars start showing up on many crops this month, especially cabbages and broccoli.  Inspect leaves for chewing, remove or apply a safe chemical control directly on the caterpillar.  You could use Bacillus (Bt) biological spray per package directions.

Several insects that disrupt fruiting will visit your grapes; control them with insecticidal soap to lessen the impact.

Grape foliage with blackened or gray film on it will need to be thinned out so air movement can be increased through the plant.  Check the base of grapevines after a severe winter for unusual looking growth.  Cut vines to ground. Retrain the new growth onto the arbor or trellis.  If the leaves appear pale or stunted, the nutrient level may be unbalanced or inadequate.  Take a soil sample to your local garden center if you are unsure.

Blueberry bushes with a yellowing discoloration on the leaves are a sign of iron deficiency or unavailable nutrients.  Iron sulfate at the label rate of application can be used to begin the recovery process.  This may take a few seasons.

Helpful Hints

An insect identification guide with color pictures can greatly help identify unknown infestation problems.  You can purchase these at local garden centers or nurseries.
